The tax change tipped workers should know about
Up to $25,000 in tips. Federally deductible.
Section 224 of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed 4 July 2025, lets workers in tipped occupations deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tip income from federal income tax. The IRS finalised the rules in April 2026 and named the occupations that qualify.
Tips have to be voluntary and reported to count — which is exactly how Tip Any $1 is designed to work. Automatic gratuities and service charges don't qualify.
- Up to $25,000 a year deductible from federal income tax, per return.
- 71 listed occupations — servers, stylists, drivers, entertainers, digital content creators and more. The list is closed; if your job isn't on it, you don't qualify.
- Cash, card and app tips all count, as long as they're voluntary and reported.
- Standard or itemised — you can claim it either way.
- Phases out above $150,000 single, $300,000 joint.
- Income tax only — Social Security and Medicare still apply, and state tax rules vary.
- Tax years 2025–2028, then it expires unless Congress extends it.
